RMS Empress of Ireland was a Canadian Pacific liner that sank in the St Lawrence River on 29 May 1914 after a collision in fog with the Norwegian collier Storstad near Pointe-au-Pere (Rimouski), Quebec. She went down in about 14 minutes; 1,012 people died, the worst peacetime loss on a Canadian waterway and one of the deadliest in Canadian maritime history. The casualty toll exceeded that of the Lusitania and trailed only the Titanic among contemporary liner losses.
