Extra Master

F3. Seafaring Life, Education, Professions and Institutions

Definition

Highest historical UK Board of Trade deck qualification.

Extra Master was the highest deck qualification of the British Board of Trade, an examination beyond the ordinary foreign-going master’s certificate that tested advanced navigation, ship construction, and naval architecture. It carried no extra command privilege but marked academic distinction and was long valued for shore careers in surveying, examining, and teaching. The certificate predates the modern STCW Convention and survives today mainly as a historical credential and a mark of professional standing among master mariners.
