FCEV Hybrid Vessel

D6. Decarbonization, emissions and alternative fuels

Definition

Vessel using fuel cells and batteries.

An FCEV hybrid vessel pairs a hydrogen fuel cell with a battery bank, so the fuel cell handles steady cruise load while the battery absorbs transients and supplies peak power for acceleration and maneuvering. The split lets the fuel cell run near its efficiency sweet spot and downsizes the stack against the vessel’s peak demand. The Sea Change ferry is the reference case: a 360 kW PEM fuel cell with a 100 kWh lithium battery, carrying 264 kg of compressed hydrogen at 250 bar for about two days of operation. Tank-to-wake emissions are water only; the well-to-wake figure follows the hydrogen pathway.
