Fixed Fire Detection and Alarm System (FDAS)

B4. Shipbuilding, Materials, Sea Trials, Retrofits and Recycling

Definition

Type-approved system per FSS Code.

A fixed fire detection and alarm system is the permanently installed, type-approved network of detectors, manually operated call points, control panels, and audible and visual alarms required by SOLAS chapter II-2 and detailed in the FSS Code chapter 9. Detectors respond to heat, smoke, flame, or a combination, with sensitivity and performance set against the FSS Code and tested to standards such as EN 54 and IEC 60092-504; smoke detectors protect accommodation and stairways, heat or flame detectors protect machinery spaces. The 2026 SOLAS amendments added linear heat detector requirements and tightened detector positioning and signaling. The control panel must show the affected section on the navigation bridge.
