FSS Code

X158. IMO Conventions, Protocols, Codes, and Resolutions

Definition

International Code for Fire Safety Systems, adopted by MSC.98(73) and made mandatory under SOLAS II-2 from 1 July 2002.

The FSS Code gives the detailed technical specifications for the fire safety systems that SOLAS Chapter II-2 requires, covering fixed gas and water-based extinguishing systems, detection and alarm, emergency fire pumps, ventilation, breathing apparatus, and fixed local-application firefighting. It was adopted by Resolution MSC.98(73) and made mandatory under SOLAS from 1 July 2002, replacing prescriptive text scattered through II-2. Amendments add provisions such as foam systems for vehicle and ro-ro spaces and protection for cargoes carried under the IGF and IGC regimes.
