Flat rack
C3. Logistics, freight forwarding and multimodal tradeDefinition
Container with collapsible or fixed end walls.
A flat rack is a container with a base and two end walls but no side walls or roof, used for over-width, over-height, or heavy cargo that will not fit a closed box: machinery, pipes, vehicles, and project pieces. The end walls are either fixed or collapsible; collapsible racks fold flat so four empties stack as one unit for repositioning. Built on the ISO 1496-5 platform-container family at 20-foot and 40-foot lengths, flat racks carry heavy concentrated loads, with 40-foot units rated to roughly 40 tonnes payload. Cargo is secured to lashing rings along the base rails. It is the standard equipment for out-of-gauge cargo that still moves on a cellular vessel.
