Fleet Modernization
D6. Decarbonization, emissions and alternative fuelsDefinition
Replacement and upgrading of vessels for efficiency.
Fleet modernization is the planned replacement and retrofit of older tonnage with vessels that burn less fuel and emit less carbon per unit of transport work. Drivers are regulatory and commercial: the Carbon Intensity Indicator under MARPOL Annex VI, in force since 1 January 2023, rates each ship A to E annually, and a D for three consecutive years or a single E forces a corrective action plan, pushing owners toward newbuilds, engine power limitation retrofits, alternative-fuel conversions, and energy-saving devices. The EU Emissions Trading System and FuelEU Maritime add a direct cost to carbon, sharpening the case for replacing inefficient ships.
