Engine Power Limitation

X112. IMO GHG Strategy, CII, EEXI and EU Maritime Regulation

Definition

Compliance measure under EEXI restricting maximum continuous rating through a physical limiter or software lock-out.

Engine power limitation caps a main engine’s maximum continuous rating below its rated value through a mechanical limiter or a software lock, the most common way ships meet the EEXI required index without physical modification. Under MEPC.335(76) the limiter must be sealed and verifiable, with a documented procedure and reserve-power override for safety in heavy weather or for navigation. Because it only restricts the attainable index, not the engine the ship normally uses at sea, EPL is a low-cost compliance route that may not change actual fuel use.
