Trajectory-optimization methods developed for aircraft (minimizing fuel or time over a wind field subject to airspace and performance constraints) reused as analogues in ship voyage optimization. Both solve a least-cost path through a moving fluid medium using the platform’s speed-power response. The crossover is conceptual, not a defined maritime standard: weather routing borrows the same calculus-of-variations and dynamic-programming framing aviation uses. The maritime referent is voyage/weather optimization; the aviation label is descriptive of method origin, not a governing instrument.
