Floating Storage Regasification Unit (FSRU)

E4. Cruise, offshore energy and auxiliary/specialised fleets

Definition

LNG regasification vessel.

A Floating Storage Regasification Unit is an LNG carrier-form vessel that stores liquefied natural gas and regasifies it aboard for delivery ashore through a connection to the gas grid, a floating import terminal that can be deployed far faster and cheaper than a land terminal. FSRUs surged in European deployment after 2022 to replace pipeline gas. The unit can be purpose-built or converted from an LNG carrier, and many retain the option to trade as a carrier when not on station.
