Foiling Ferry

A passenger ferry that lifts its hull clear of the water on hydrofoils at cruising speed, cutting wave drag and wake; recent designs pair foils with electric propulsion for low-wake harbor routes. The lift principle follows classic hydrofoil practice, but new entrants such as Candela’s P-12 (Stockholm, in service 2024) and Artemis Technologies eFoilers combine computer-controlled foils with battery power. As a high-speed passenger craft above the HSC speed threshold, such a vessel falls under SOLAS Chapter X and the IMO High-Speed Craft (HSC) Code.
