International Code of Signals letter F, meaning "I am disabled; communicate with me."

Letter F of the International Code of Signals signals “I am disabled; communicate with me.” Foxtrot is white with a central red diamond. A disabled ship hoists it singly to ask passing vessels to open communication and to warn that it cannot proceed under its own power. The same letter F appears in aviation and in the NATO phonetic alphabet, but at sea the single-flag hoist carries this specific distress-adjacent meaning.
