Fram Museum

F2. Maritime Culture, Heritage, Archaeology, Art and Museums

Definition

Oslo institution housing the polar exploration ship Fram.

An Oslo museum at Bygdoy, opened 1936, built around the polar exploration ship Fram, the wooden vessel designed by Colin Archer for Fridtjof Nansen’s 1893 to 1896 Arctic drift. Fram later carried Roald Amundsen toward Antarctica for his 1911 South Pole expedition, reaching the highest northern and most southern latitudes of any wooden ship. The museum also houses the polar schooner Gjoa, first vessel through the Northwest Passage.
