Terms identifying the world’s sail-training fleet: named barques, schooners, brigantines and full-rigged ships such as Alexander von Humboldt, Adventuress and Amerigo Vespucci, their builders, rig types, sail areas and owning foundations and navies, and the tall-ship associations and youth-voyage programs that operate them in Sail Training International events.

Adventure (Brixham)

German barque built 1906 as Lightship Reserve Sonderburg, converted 1986 to three masted barque with green sails, 62.5 m length, retired from sail training 2011 and replaced by A. von Humboldt II.
Amerigo Vespucci
Florentine navigator whose voyages between 1499 and 1502 led to the naming of the Americas.
Amphitrite
1887 German built three masted topsail schooner, 40 m length, restored 1980s as a UK based youth sail training vessel under Cirdan Sailing Trust.
Anny von Hamburg
1911 German topsail schooner used in heritage sail training charters in the North Sea and Baltic.

Caribbean island and superyacht hub home to the Antigua Charter Yacht Show.
Asgard II
Irish national sail training brigantine built 1981 at Arklow, 25.7 m length, owned by Coiste an Asgard, sank in the Bay of Biscay on 11 September 2008, all 25 crew rescued.
ASTA (American Sail Training Association)
Founded 1973 in Newport Rhode Island, rebranded as Tall Ships America in 2007, the US member national sail training organization affiliated with Sail Training International.
Atlantis
Dutch three masted topsail schooner built 1905 as a North Sea lightship, converted to sail training in 1984, 43 m length.
Atyla
Spanish gaff schooner built 1984 in Bermeo Basque Country, 31 m length, owned by Atyla Ship Foundation, runs international youth voyages under STI.

Bap Union
Peruvian Navy four masted barque built 2014 to 2016 by Freire Shipyard Vigo, 115.5 m length, 3,500 sq m sail area, largest sail training ship in Latin America after commissioning.
Bark Europa
Dutch three masted barque built 1911 in Hamburg as the lightship Senator Brockes, rebuilt as a barque 1986 to 1994, 56 m length, operates Antarctic and trans ocean sail training voyages.
Barque
A sailing vessel of three or more masts, square-rigged on all but the aftermost, which carries fore-and-aft sails.
Barquentine
A sailing vessel square-rigged on the foremast only, with fore-and-aft sails on the remaining masts.
Belem
French three masted barque built 1896 at Nantes, 58 m length, 1,200 sq m sail area, last surviving 19th century French merchant tall ship and an active French sail training vessel.
Belle Poule
French Navy two masted topsail schooner built 1932 at Fecamp, 37.5 m length, paired with sister ship Etoile for officer cadet training at Ecole Navale.

1904 British west country trading ketch, 32 m sparred length, restored for adventure sail training based at Plymouth.
Bima Suci
Indonesian Navy barquentine built 2016 to 2017 at Freire Vigo, 111.2 m length, replacement and partner to Dewaruci as Indonesian Navy training tall ship.
Black Pearl
Sail Training Association of Western Australia operated brigantines have used heritage names; Black Pearl most commonly refers to non training charter craft and is excluded from STI series.
Bluenose II
Canadian gaff rigged knockabout schooner launched 1963 in Lunenburg Nova Scotia as a replica of the 1921 Bluenose, 49 m sparred length, provincial sail training and ambassador vessel.
Bounty replica (1960)
MGM built three masted full rigged ship launched 1960 at Lunenburg, 55 m length, lost off North Carolina during Hurricane Sandy on 29 October 2012 with two fatalities.
Brig
A two-masted vessel square-rigged on both masts.
Brigantine
Two-masted vessel with square-rigged foremast and fore-and-aft mainmast, common in eighteenth and nineteenth century coastal trade.

Uruguayan Navy three masted staysail schooner built 1930 in Cadiz, 60 m length, the cadet training ship of the Armada Nacional del Uruguay.

Cisne Branco
Brazilian Navy full rigged ship built 1999 at Damen Amsterdam, 76 m length, modeled on 19th century clipper lines, operates as the Brazilian Navy ceremonial tall ship.
Class A
STI category for square rigged vessels over 40 m LOA and all other vessels over 40 m, the headline class of the Tall Ships Races including Sedov, Kruzenshtern, Eagle and Cuauhtemoc.
Class B
STI category for traditionally rigged vessels (gaffers, schooners and similar) under 40 m LOA, comprising many heritage smacks, ketches and topsail schooners.
Class C
STI category for modern rigged vessels (Bermudan) under 40 m LOA without a spinnaker like sail.
Class D
STI category for modern rigged vessels under 40 m LOA carrying a spinnaker or similar downwind sail.
Concordia (school ship)
Canadian three masted staysail schooner built 1992 at Szczecin, 57 m length, operated by West Island College International, sank off Brazil on 17 February 2010; all 64 aboard rescued.
Coronet
1885 American schooner yacht, 40 m length, owned by the International Yacht Restoration School; under long term restoration at Newport Rhode Island.
Creoula
Portuguese four masted lugger schooner built 1937 in Lisbon, 67 m length, former Grand Banks cod fisher, today a Portuguese Navy sail training ship.
Cuauhtemoc
Mexican Navy three masted barque built 1982 at Astilleros Celaya Bilbao, 90.5 m length, 2,368 sq m sail area, fourth and last of the Celaya Latin American training ship series.
Cutty Sark Tall Ships Race
