Fuel Cell Cruise Vessel

A passenger ship using fuel cells, typically proton-exchange-membrane or solid-oxide stacks running on hydrogen or methanol-reformate, to supply hotel and propulsion power with no combustion SOx or NOx. MSC’s World-class World Europa, delivered in 2022, carries a 150 kW solid-oxide fuel-cell demonstrator; Viking’s Libra (delivery from 2026) is designed for hydrogen PEM fuel cells. Such installations are assessed under the IGF Code (IMO Resolution MSC.391(95), in force 1 January 2017) and SOLAS Chapter II-1 Part G for low-flashpoint and hydrogen fuels.
