Fuel Oil Sample

The MARPOL fuel oil sample is the sealed, representative sample of each delivered bunker that the supplier provides under MARPOL Annex VI Regulation 18.8.1. It is retained on board, accessible, for not less than twelve months from delivery, and is the reference sample for verifying the sulphur content stated on the Bunker Delivery Note in any compliance dispute. Sampling and the verification procedure follow MEPC.182(59) and the 2022 in-use and onboard fuel sampling guidelines. Separate in-use and onboard samples support the Regulation 14 sulphur check during port State control, with the MARPOL sample as the binding reference.
