GHG Intensity (FuelEU)

GHG intensity under FuelEU Maritime is the greenhouse-gas emissions of the energy used aboard a ship, expressed in grams of CO2-equivalent per megajoule (gCO2eq/MJ) on a well-to-wake basis that counts both fuel-production and onboard-combustion emissions including CO2, methane, and nitrous oxide. The Regulation took effect 1 January 2025 for ships above 5,000 GT trading in the EU and EEA. The limit ratchets from the 2020 fleet baseline of 91.16 gCO2eq/MJ: a 2% cut to 89.34 gCO2eq/MJ for 2025 to 2029, 6% from 2030, reaching 80% by 2050. Exceeding the target triggers a penalty or pooling and banking of compliance balance.
