Tonne CO2 equivalent
B2. Marine EngineeringDefinition
Common unit for FuelEU and EU ETS reporting.
A tonne of CO2 equivalent (tCO2eq) is a common unit that converts non-CO2 greenhouse gases into the mass of carbon dioxide with the same warming effect, using each gas’s global warming potential. For shipping it lets methane and nitrous oxide from combustion and fuel supply be added to CO2 on one scale. FuelEU Maritime measures fuel GHG intensity in gCO2eq/MJ on this basis, while the EU Emissions Trading System prices a ship operator’s emissions per tonne of CO2 equivalent surrendered as allowances. Methane’s potency makes methane slip from gas engines material when counted in CO2 equivalent.
