Grain Trade
F1. Maritime HistoryDefinition
Sailing-era and modern bulk trade route, notably the Australian Grain Race of the 1920s and 1930s.
The bulk seaborne movement of wheat and other cereals, from the sailing-era long hauls to today’s dry-bulk traffic. In the 1920s and 1930s the surviving four-masted steel barques ran the Australian Grain Race, carrying South Australian wheat to Europe round Cape Horn; Gustaf Erikson’s Aland fleet was the last major operator, and the 1939 race (won by Moshulu) was the final one before the Second World War. Modern grain moves in Panamax and Handysize bulk carriers.
