Groupage

C3. Logistics, freight forwarding and multimodal trade

Definition

Consolidation of LCL cargo.

Groupage is the consolidation of less-than-container-load (LCL) cargo from multiple shippers into one container for the main carriage. The forwarder collects the part loads, stuffs them at a container freight station, and bills each shipper for the space and weight used. It gives small shippers access to container economics, at the cost of extra handling, longer transit, and shared exposure to any single consignment’s customs or damage problems within the box.
