CFS

C3. Logistics, freight forwarding and multimodal trade

Definition

Container freight station for less than container load cargo.

A container freight station (CFS) is the facility where LCL cargo is consolidated into containers for export and deconsolidated from containers on import. Forwarders and consolidators stuff boxes at the origin CFS, issuing house bills to each shipper, and strip them at the destination CFS for onward delivery. The CFS is the operational pivot of the groupage trade and the customs examination point for many part-load shipments, distinct from the container yard, which stores full boxes.
