Handymax/Supramax
B5. Ship Types and Individual VesselsDefinition
40,000-65,000 DWT bulker.
Handymax and Supramax are geared dry-bulk classes between roughly 40,000 and 60,000 dwt. The older Handymax sat near 40,000 to 50,000 dwt; the Supramax that replaced it runs about 50,000 to 60,000 dwt on a length near 190 meters. Both carry four deck cranes of 30 to 35 tonnes, so they work cargo without shore gear, the trait that keeps them in the worldwide grain, coal, bauxite, steel, and minor-bulk trades. The Supramax is the spot-market workhorse of the handy segment. The Ultramax, about 60,000 to 66,000 dwt, is the newer evolution above it.
