Panamax bulker
B5. Ship Types and Individual VesselsDefinition
60,000-80,000 DWT bulker.
A Panamax bulker is a dry-bulk carrier of about 65,000 to 80,000 dwt sized to the original Panama Canal locks: 32.31 meters maximum beam, 294.13 meters length, and roughly 12 meters draft, the limits in force from 1914 until the Neopanamax locks opened in 2016. The 32.3 meter beam, not deadweight, is the binding constraint, so the class is long and relatively narrow. Most are gearless and trade coal, grain, and bauxite on longer routes that still favor the canal. The Kamsarmax variant stretches length to 229 meters at the same beam to carry more cargo, around 82,000 dwt.
