House airway bill

C3. Logistics, freight forwarding and multimodal trade

Definition

HAWB.

A house air waybill (HAWB) is the transport document a freight forwarder issues to a shipper for an air consignment, evidencing the forwarder’s own contract of carriage with the customer. The forwarder consolidates several HAWBs under one master air waybill (MAWB) that the actual air carrier issues to the forwarder. Like the master, it is a non-negotiable receipt and contract, never a document of title, so goods are released to the named consignee without surrender of an original. The HAWB follows the IATA Resolution 600a layout and the underlying carriage is governed by the Montreal Convention 1999.
