IMCO

A1. The IMO and the international regulatory framework

Definition

Inter-Governmental Maritime Consultative Organization, IMO's name from 1948 until 1982.

The Inter-Governmental Maritime Consultative Organization was the IMO’s original name from the adoption of its constituent convention in 1948 until 22 May 1982, when amendments adopted in 1975 and 1977 renamed it. Early IMCO work produced the 1960 SOLAS Convention and the first version of the IMDG Code. The change to International Maritime Organization signaled a shift from a purely consultative body to one adopting binding conventions.
