1948 Convention on the International Maritime Organization, the constituent instrument.
The constituent treaty of the IMO, signed in Geneva on 6 March 1948 as the Convention on the Inter-Governmental Maritime Consultative Organization and entered into force on 17 March 1958 once 21 states, including seven with at least 1 million GT of tonnage, had accepted it. It establishes the Assembly, Council, and committees, and defines the organization’s purpose and membership rules. The name changed from IMCO to IMO by amendments that took effect on 22 May 1982.
