Inland freight

C1. Commercial shipping, chartering, economics and finance

Definition

Freight for movement of cargo from inland origin to port.

Inland freight is the charge for moving cargo between an inland point and the seaport by truck, rail, or barge, the land leg that bookends the ocean voyage. On an intermodal through rate it is the pre-carriage from the shipper’s door or inland depot to the load port, or the on-carriage from the discharge port to the consignee. Who pays and arranges it splits along the haulage choice: under carrier haulage the line organizes and prices the inland leg, under merchant haulage the cargo owner does. The Incoterm fixes the cost cut-off, for example FOB places inland freight to the port on the seller.
