Inland Waterway Vessel

E4. Cruise, offshore energy and auxiliary/specialised fleets

Definition

River/canal cargo or passenger craft.

A cargo or passenger craft built for rivers, canals, and lakes rather than open sea, with shallow draft, low air draft for bridge clearance, and a hull optimized for restricted channels. European inland ships fall under the EU’s CESNI/ES-TRIN technical standard and the ADN for dangerous-goods carriage on inland waterways; crew hold an inland boatmaster’s certificate. Self-propelled barges, pushed convoys, and tank barges all sit in this class. They carry inland AIS and inland ECDIS, distinct from the SOLAS maritime equipment.
