Intermodal container
C3. Logistics, freight forwarding and multimodal tradeDefinition
Standard ISO container.
An intermodal container is a standardized ISO freight container built to be transferred between ship, rail, and road without unpacking the cargo. The corner castings, dimensions, and ratings follow ISO 668; the coding and check-digit marking follow ISO 6346. A 20-foot box is the basis of the TEU; standard height is 8 feet 6 inches, with the high-cube variant at 9 feet 6 inches. Standardization since the 1960s is what made door-to-door container logistics economically viable.
