ISO 6346

ISO 6346 is the international standard for the coding, identification, and marking of intermodal containers. It defines the owner code (three letters), the equipment category identifier, the six-digit serial number, and the modulo-11 check digit, plus the size-and-type code. The owner prefixes are registered with the Bureau International des Containers (BIC). The check digit lets terminals, EDI systems, and gate cameras validate that a container number was read or transmitted correctly.
