International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF)

F3. Seafaring Life, Education, Professions and Institutions

Definition

Global union federation including seafarers.

The International Transport Workers’ Federation is the global union federation for transport workers, including the seafarers’ section that negotiates wages and conditions and runs the well-known flag-of-convenience campaign. The ITF and the Joint Negotiating Group set internationally bargained crew wage rates through the International Bargaining Forum, and ITF inspectors board ships worldwide to check seafarers’ contracts and recover unpaid wages. The MLC 2006 gives those contractual rights a treaty floor.
