Joseph Conrad Sail Training Heritage
F3. Seafaring Life, Education, Professions and InstitutionsDefinition
Mystic Seaport's iron sailing ship used for training.
The legacy of the full-rigged iron ship Joseph Conrad, built in 1882 at Copenhagen as the Danish training ship Georg Stage, renamed in 1934 for the novelist and former mariner Joseph Conrad. Used for sail training and a circumnavigation under Alan Villiers, she has been preserved at Mystic Seaport in Connecticut since 1947, where she serves as a static sail-training and maritime-heritage vessel for youth programs rather than a seagoing STCW platform.
