Juliet Flag

F5. The Reference Layer: Glossary, Units, Signals and Information Sources

Definition

International Code of Signals letter J, meaning "I am on fire and have dangerous cargo on board; keep clear."

Letter J of the International Code of Signals warns “I am on fire and have dangerous cargo on board; keep clear,” or that the vessel is leaking dangerous cargo. Juliet is blue with a horizontal white band, the white edged in blue above and below. A ship hoists it singly so nearby traffic keeps well off, a serious hazard signal on tankers and vessels carrying IMDG goods. The flag combines a fire warning with a dangerous-goods warning in one hoist.
