LEG (Liquefied Ethylene Gas) carrier

A LEG (liquefied ethylene gas) carrier transports ethylene, which boils at minus 104 degrees Celsius and so demands either fully refrigerated tanks at atmospheric pressure or semi-pressurized, semi-refrigerated (semi-ref) pressure-vessel tanks built in special nickel-alloy steels for the low temperature. Most are small, roughly 2,000 to 15,000 cubic meters, serving petrochemical trades between crackers and plants. Larger ethylene-capable ships exist with hybrid tanks that also carry LPG or, in a few cases, LNG, giving an operator cargo flexibility. The ship is built and certified to the IMO IGC Code, which governs containment, materials, and the cargo handling system for all gas carriers regardless of size.
