Gas carrier
C1. Commercial shipping, chartering, economics and financeDefinition
Vessel for liquefied gases such as LNG, LPG, ethane, or ethylene.
A gas carrier is a ship built to carry liquefied gases in bulk under the IMO IGC Code, with insulated cargo tanks and cargo handling for cryogenic or pressurized service. The class splits into LNG carriers (methane at minus 162 degrees Celsius) and LPG and chemical gas carriers handling propane, butane, ammonia, ethylene, and ethane. Containment ranges from fully pressurized small carriers through semi-refrigerated to fully refrigerated and membrane or Moss type tanks. Boil-off gas management and cargo segregation define operation. The IGC Code is mandatory under SOLAS Chapter VII.
