IGC Code

A2. Maritime safety legislation: SOLAS and its codes

Definition

International Code for the Construction and Equipment of Ships Carrying Liquefied Gases in Bulk.

The IGC Code is the mandatory standard for ships carrying liquefied gases in bulk, applying to gas carriers built on or after 1 July 1986 and mandatory under SOLAS Chapter VII Part C. It classifies cargo containment as independent (Type A, B, or C), membrane, or integral tanks, and sets requirements for materials at cryogenic temperatures, secondary barriers, cargo handling, reliquefaction, and gas detection. The 2016 revision (MSC.370(93)) addressed boil-off gas as fuel and new tank arrangements. It governs LNG, LPG, ethylene, and ammonia carriers alongside the IGF Code for gas-fueled ships.
