MAN ES ME-GA
B2. Marine EngineeringDefinition
Two-stroke ammonia dual-fuel engine (announced).
The MAN ES ME-GA is a two-stroke, low-speed dual-fuel engine from MAN Energy Solutions that burns LNG on the lean-burn Otto cycle at low gas-supply pressure, with a fuel-oil pilot. It was MAN’s low-pressure answer to the WinGD X-DF, aimed mainly at LNG carriers for lower fuel-gas-handling cost than the high-pressure ME-GI, and uses EGR to cut methane slip by roughly 30 to 50%. It is not an ammonia engine. MAN announced in 2024 that it would discontinue the ME-GA, citing the cost of meeting expected IMO methane regulations against the inherent slip of the Otto cycle. More than 260 had been ordered before the decision.
