Definition

Prevention of pollution by harmful substances in packaged form.

MARPOL Annex III prevents pollution by harmful substances carried by sea in packaged form. It makes mandatory the marine pollutant provisions of the IMDG Code, covering identification, packing, marking and labeling, documentation, stowage, quantity limits, and exceptions. A substance is harmful if it is identified as a marine pollutant in the IMDG Code. The Annex applies to all ships carrying such goods and is enforced through the dangerous goods manifest and stowage plan. It entered into force on 1 July 1992.
