Mass flow meter

C2. Ship operations, crewing and technical management

Definition

MFM, custody transfer meter required for bunkering in Singapore and other ports.

An MFM, a Coriolis-type meter that measures bunker fuel by mass in real time during transfer, used for custody-transfer metering. Singapore made MFM delivery mandatory for marine fuel oil in 2017 and for distillates from 2019, which sharply cut the short-delivery disputes that plagued tank-dipping. The meter reads mass directly, so it sidesteps the temperature and density corrections that make volumetric gauging contestable.
