MEPC 80 finance metric

C1. Commercial shipping, chartering, economics and finance

Definition

Carbon intensity considerations affecting Poseidon-aligned lending.

There is no single instrument formally named the MEPC 80 finance metric; the seed points to the carbon-intensity trajectory that MEPC 80 set and that ship finance uses to test portfolio alignment. MEPC 80, held July 2023, adopted the 2023 IMO GHG Strategy (Resolution MEPC.377(80)), with a net-zero ambition around 2050 and checkpoints of 20 percent striving for 30 percent by 2030 and 70 percent striving for 80 percent by 2040 against 2008. The Poseidon Principles measure a lender’s shipping book against an emissions-intensity decarbonization trajectory and were updated to the 2023 IMO ambition. The working metric is the gap between a portfolio’s carbon intensity and that reference path.
