A3. Marine environmental legislation: MARPOL and its annexesDefinition
Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index, MARPOL Annex VI Chapter 4.
The Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index applies the EEDI design metric retroactively to ships already in service, required from 1 January 2023 under MARPOL Annex VI Reg.23. Each ship of 400 GT and above computes an attained EEXI that must sit below a required value derived from the EEDI reference line with a ship-type reduction factor. Most owners comply through engine power limitation or shaft power limitation rather than physical modification, capping installed power to lift the calculated index. It is a one-time technical certification, unlike the annual operational CII.
