Methanol-fueled feeder (Stena Germanica)

Stena Germanica is a 240 m ro-pax ferry, not a container feeder, and was the world’s first commercial vessel to run on methanol after Stena Line converted it at Remontowa Shipyard in Poland in early 2015. Built at Gdynia in 2001, she runs the Gothenburg to Kiel route and was retrofitted with dual-fuel Wartsila four-stroke engines burning methanol with a marine-gas-oil pilot, with diesel as backup. The conversion cut SOx by about 99 percent and CO2 by about 25 percent against the prior fuel. The seed label of methanol-fueled feeder is incorrect: she carries roll-on roll-off freight and passengers, not cell-guided containers. She is the proof-of-concept that opened methanol as a marine fuel.
