Mob (Man Overboard)

Man overboard (MOB) is the emergency of a person in the water from the ship, and the immediate actions to recover them. The first response is hardwired: shout the alarm, release the lifebuoy with light and smoke on the casualty’s side, post a pointer to keep the person in sight, hit the MOB button to mark the GPS position, and order hard-over wheel toward the side the person fell. Recovery turns include the Williamson turn, which reverses track to return down the original line in reduced visibility, the Anderson single turn with the person in sight, and the Scharnow turn. SOLAS III drill rules require regular MOB and boat drills so the bridge team runs the turn without a manual.
