Muster Station

A2. Maritime safety legislation: SOLAS and its codes

Definition

Marked under SOLAS III/9.

Muster stations, also called assembly stations, are the designated places where crew and passengers gather on an emergency alarm before proceeding to survival-craft embarkation. SOLAS III/11 requires muster stations close to the embarkation stations, with enough space to marshal and instruct persons, and on passenger ships they are sited in sheltered areas such as public rooms. Each person’s muster station is recorded against their name on the muster list under SOLAS III/8. Routes to the stations are marked with low-location lighting and signs. Passenger musters are held before or immediately after departure under III/19.
