Abandon ship drill
C2. Ship operations, crewing and technical managementDefinition
Mandatory drill under SOLAS Chapter III.
An abandon ship drill is the mandatory mustering and lifeboat exercise required by SOLAS Chapter III Regulation 19. Every crew member takes part in at least one abandon ship drill and one fire drill each month. Where more than 25 percent of the crew have not joined a drill on that ship in the previous month, the drill is held within 24 hours of leaving port. Each drill includes reporting to assigned muster stations, donning lifejackets and immersion suits, lowering at least one lifeboat after preparation, and starting its engine. Each lifeboat is launched and maneuvered in the water by its operating crew at least once every three months.
