Definition

Founded 1844, holder of the America's Cup until 1983.

The New York Yacht Club, founded 30 July 1844 aboard John Cox Stevens’s yacht Gimcrack off the Battery, is one of the oldest US yacht clubs. Stevens’s syndicate schooner America won the 1851 regatta around the Isle of Wight; the trophy was deeded to the NYYC in 1857 and renamed the America’s Cup. The club defended it 24 times across 132 years, the longest winning streak in sport, until losing to Australia II in 1983.
