America's Cup
F4. Recreational Boating, Yachting and SportDefinition
Oldest international sailing trophy, contested since 1851.
The America’s Cup is the oldest international trophy in sport, won by the schooner America at Cowes in 1851 and held by the New York Yacht Club until 1983, the longest winning streak in sport. It is a match-race duel between a defender and one challenger that has driven yacht design from the J Class through 12-Metres to today’s foiling AC75 monohulls. The Deed of Gift governs the terms, and the holder sets the venue and the class for the next defense.
