B5. Ship Types and Individual Vessels

Definition

Vessels fitting expanded Panama Canal locks.

Neopanamax, also written New Panamax, is the largest ship that fits the expanded Panama Canal locks opened on 26 June 2016. The lock chambers measure 427 meters usable length, 55 meters wide, and 18.3 meters deep, allowing a ship up to 366 meters length overall, 49 meters beam, and about 15.2 meters draft. That nearly triples container capacity over the old Panamax (294 by 32.3 by 12 meters), letting a box ship carry up to roughly 14,000 TEU through the canal. The Panama Canal Authority has since adjusted permitted length and draft within those lock walls. The class reshaped liner deployment on the Asia to US East Coast trade.
