Capesize

B5. Ship Types and Individual Vessels

Definition

Bulker >150,000 DWT too large for Suez/Panama traditionally.

A Capesize bulk carrier is too large to transit the Suez or Panama canals at full load and so routes around the Cape of Good Hope or Cape Horn, the trade behind the name. The class runs from roughly 150,000 to 200,000 DWT, gearless, and serves dedicated iron-ore and coal terminals, with iron ore and coal making up the bulk of the cargo. Above it sit the Newcastlemax, sized to the Port of Newcastle, and the VLOC and Valemax ore carriers of 300,000 to 400,000 DWT built for the Brazil-to-China iron-ore route.
