Designated under MARPOL Annex VI.
The North American Emission Control Area, designated under MARPOL Annex VI and in force from 1 August 2012, covers most waters within 200 nautical miles of the United States and Canadian coasts on the Atlantic, Pacific, and Gulf of Mexico, plus the Hawaiian Islands. Within it, ships must burn fuel at or below 0.10 percent sulphur and, for engines built from 1 January 2016, meet NOx Tier III limits. It is one of several ECAs alongside the Baltic and North Sea SOx and NOx areas and the United States Caribbean ECA.
